The Berlin Defense has been around for a long time, but it was only in the year 2000 that it gained real popularity. Vladimir Kramnik deployed it with great success against Garry Kasparov to take the World Championship title and it has remained popular to this day.

You’ll learn the intricacies of the Berlin Endgame – despite the early queen trade, the board remains full of pieces and Black retains excellent chances to play for a win. The imbalances in pawn structure and Black having the bishop pair mean that this is not a trivial draw at all.

Once you’ve mastered this crucial endgame, you’ll realize the true beauty of the Berlin Defense. White doesn’t have a ton of dangerous sidelines for you to learn, so you won’t have to memorize a massive amount of theory.

The Berlin’s reputation as highly theoretical and complex may seem intimidating – but IM Bulmaga approached the opening as someone who wanted to add a reliable but low maintenance weapon to her repertoire. The result of that is you get a compact repertoire with just over 200 trainable variations.

There are deeply annotated model games by top players like Vladimir Kramnik and Alireza Firouzja.
