Description
The purpose of this class is to teach the students about what systems are and how they can be used in a home environment. They are an economic concept. This is true in the sense that they are a tool that can be used by people to help them get the most benefits out of their lives while incurring the least amount of cost to receive them. In the simplest of situations, systems take the forms of structured patterns of behavior that are often described as being habits, routines, and chores. The scenario that will be used to help students learn about this topic is one in which a new home is being constructed. Even before the foundation of a house is laid a designer must be brought in to play an important role in this project. The purpose of this person’s work is to envision a structure that will be built in accordance with how it will be used over a period of many years. The goal is to maximize its ease of use. It is to be a place where its inhabitants can get the most work done with the least amount of effort. To aid in this process, this course considers different aspects of how each type of room in a house is normally used. To aid in this process the student is encouraged to think of not only a house but also the entire world as being made up of six things. They are referred to as being “elements”. These are Matter, Energy, Space, Time, Knowledge, and Life. When building a house for example, one of the first things that must be considered is how much space will be required in each of its rooms. This does not only include overall dimensions, but also the amount of space needed to accommodate material things such as furniture. It must have enough volume for people to move around. The second perspective is that of examining the different types of material things that will be in the home. These would not only include people but also the types and styles of furniture. Smaller physical items such as food, clothing, various consumables and tools need to be purchased for use and also stored in a home. The third category is the need for energy. It is normally brought into a house from a public utility. Then it is distributed throughout this structure with wiring. Conveniently, electricity can be converted into other forms of energy such as heat, light, and motion as it is required. Looking at the use of a house from the perspective of time is also explored. This focus looks at how much time is required to complete different types of work, or chores that must be completed on an ongoing basis. Food purchasing, food preparation, and doing laundry for example all take a considerable amount of time to get done. People living in a house can have certain expectations as to when dinner will be served, what will be served, and when dirty clothes will be washed and ready for re-use. Another perspective focuses on the elements of Knowledge and Life. These exist collective within each person living in the in a home. They have different values and personalities that might cause social conflict. On the other hand, they can get a lot more work done and live together more comfortably by working as a team and thereby benefit from the principles of synergy and symbiosis. Managing a household can be very complex. This condition can be quickly amplified each time another person takes up residence within it. Getting a home organized and keeping it in this condition can be a considerable amount of work. Using systems to aid in these efforts can provide benefits that go far beyond just meeting material needs. It can also support and even improve a family’s or roommate’s psychological and emotional well-being. The course then continues by examining the difficulties a person leaving a family home can encounter as they try to make a living on their own. The point is made that by utilizing the principles presented earlier in the course can help them in their pursuit of independence.
