From Fundamentals to Real-World Design, Control, and Grid Integration
What you’ll learn
✓ Understand what HVDC is and why DC is preferred over AC for long-distance and subsea power transmission.
✓ Identify all major components of an HVDC system and explain how a complete HVDC link operates.
✓ Distinguish between LCC and VSC HVDC technologies and know when each is used in real projects.
✓ Understand how HVDC systems are controlled, including power control, DC voltage control, and power reversal.
✓ Explain HVDC fault behavior and protection principles, including the challenges of DC fault clearing.
✓ Understand HVDC cable technologies, insulation systems, and thermal limits used in modern transmission.
✓ Apply basic HVDC design concepts such as voltage level selection, power rating, losses, and feasibility.
Requirements
● Basic understanding of electricity (voltage, current, power) is helpful but not mandatory.
● Basic AC circuit knowledge is useful, but all required concepts will be explained in the course.
● No prior knowledge of HVDC is required — this course starts from first principles.
● No advanced mathematics is required; explanations focus on intuition and engineering insight.
● Suitable for beginners, students, and practicing engineers interested in power systems and renewable energy.
● A computer or tablet for watching lectures and reviewing diagrams is sufficient.
● Optional: Interest in power systems, transmission, or renewable energy projects.
Description
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission has become a cornerstone of modern power systems, enabling long-distance bulk power transfer, subsea and underground connections, offshore wind integration, and interconnection of asynchronous grids. Yet HVDC is often taught in a fragmented or overly theoretical way, leaving many engineers without a clear, intuitive understanding of how real HVDC systems work.
This course is a complete A–Z guide to HVDC transmission, designed to take you from fundamental principles to real-world system design, operation, and control. Starting with the basics of DC power, losses, insulation, and transmission physics, the course gradually builds toward a deep understanding of HVDC system architecture, converter technologies, and control strategies used in modern grids.
You will learn how HVDC systems are structured from AC grid to AC grid, how overhead lines and subsea cables are selected and modeled, and how grounding and earth electrodes are engineered in practice. The course provides a clear and intuitive explanation of Line-Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage-Source Converters (VSC), including commutation failure, reactive power behavior, black-start capability, and the rise of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC).
A major focus of this course is HVDC control, an area where many courses fall short. You will gain a strong conceptual understanding of active and reactive power control, DC voltage control, power balance, and droop control—without unnecessary mathematics, but with clear physical insight.
Throughout the course, theory is continuously linked to real engineering practice through diagrams, system-level explanations, and simulation-oriented thinking. By the end, you will not only understand how HVDC works, but also why specific technologies are chosen, how operators control power flows, and how HVDC supports modern, renewable-heavy power grids.
This course is authored and presented by Power 2 Human, with a strong focus on clarity, engineering intuition, and real-world applicability.
