Description
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Fundamentals is a comprehensive course that presents a holistic view of modern clean coal and biomass conversion technology. Students will distinguish Gasification from Combustion, focusing on how gasification converts carbon-based feedstocks into a clean, versatile synthesis gas (syngas) suitable for power and chemical production. The curriculum emphasizes the IGCC objective: higher efficiency, lower emissions, and greater fuel flexibility, by integrating gasification with a power block to produce electricity from syngas-derived fuel.
Key chemical and engineering concepts include pyrolysis and thermal decomposition as preludes to gasification, followed by the sequence of homogeneous (gas-phase) and heterogeneous (solid–gas) reactions that drive tar reforming, char gasification, and syngas generation. The course elucidates the Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction (CO + H2O ⇌ CO2 + H2) and its role in adjusting the H2/CO ratio for downstream synthesis. Students examine why IGCC is inherently an integrated plant: coupling gasifier, gas cleanup, and a combined-cycle power system to optimize overall performance.
The three “islands” of an IGCC plant are analyzed: gasification, gas cleaning and conditioning, and power generation. Process descriptions cover feedstock preparation and cooling, gasification dynamics, acid gas removal (AGR), sulfur recovery unit (SRU), and WGS the integration with refinery streams. Fuel characterization for IGCC, plant integration strategies, and environmental benefits are explored through the Jazan IGCC case study, enabling practical lessons in design, operation, and techno-economic assessment.
