Master segmentation, firewalls, DMZs, intrusion detection & data diodes for industrial control systems
What you’ll learn
✓ Design network segmentation strategies for ICS environments using VLANs, subnets, and air gaps aligned with the Purdue model
✓ Configure and manage industrial firewalls with rule sets tailored for OT protocols such as Modbus, OPC UA, and DNP3
✓ Architect industrial DMZ solutions incorporating jump servers, historian replication, and controlled data flow between IT and OT
✓ Implement secure remote access architectures using VPN, MFA, jump hosts, and vendor access management controls
✓ Deploy network monitoring using SPAN ports, network taps, and passive monitoring techniques that do not disrupt OT processes
✓ Evaluate ICS-specific intrusion detection systems including Claroty, Dragos, and Nozomi for anomaly and signature-based detection
✓ Understand and specify unidirectional security gateways (data diodes) for enforcing one-way data transfer from OT to IT
✓ Apply SIEM concepts to OT environments including log collection, event correlation, and ICS-specific use cases
Requirements
● Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls)
● General awareness of industrial control systems (PLCs, SCADA, DCS) is helpful but not essential
● No prior ICS cybersecurity experience required — the course builds from foundational principles
● A willingness to think about security from an operational technology perspective where availability and safety take priority
Description
A single misconfigured firewall rule. A flat network with no segmentation. A remote access session with no MFA. In industrial environments, these are not just IT inconveniences — they are pathways to safety incidents, process disruptions, and environmental catastrophe.
Most network security training is built for enterprise IT. It assumes you can patch on Tuesday, reboot at will, and tolerate a few seconds of downtime. None of that applies in ICS/OT. Your SCADA systems run 24/7. Your PLCs cannot be rebooted mid-process. Your safety instrumented systems must remain available at all times.
This course bridges that gap. In 3 focused hours, you will learn how to design, implement, and defend network architectures purpose-built for industrial environments — from VLAN segmentation and industrial DMZ design through to intrusion detection systems calibrated for OT protocols and unidirectional security gateways that enforce one-way data flow by physics, not policy.
What makes this course different: every concept is grounded in real ICS/OT environments. You will not learn generic firewall theory — you will learn how to write firewall rules that protect Modbus and OPC UA traffic between Levels 1 and 3 of the Purdue model. You will not study abstract IDS concepts — you will understand how tools like Claroty, Dragos, and Nozomi detect anomalies in industrial protocols that traditional IT tools completely miss.
This course is designed and delivered by a practising ICS/OT cybersecurity professional with hands-on experience securing control systems across oil & gas, power generation, and pipeline infrastructure. The content aligns with IEC 62443 principles and reflects the realities of operational technology environments where availability and safety always come first.
By the end of this course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to architect secure OT networks, evaluate segmentation strategies, specify the right monitoring tools, and defend your design decisions to both engineering and cybersecurity stakeholders.
If you are responsible for securing industrial networks — or aspire to be — enrol now and build the specialist skills the market is demanding.
