Description
Sambay Tokasi: Talking Drum Tutorials is a step-by-step course designed to make learning the talking drum clear, practical, and accessible, no matter your musical background. This course breaks down the talking drum in a way that helps you not just play patterns, but truly understand what you’re playing, why it works, and how to apply it confidently.

Taught by Samuel Baiyewu (Sambay) — a Nigerian-American professional talking drummer with over two decades of experience — this course is built from real performance knowledge, cultural understanding, and years of teaching and mentoring.

You’ll begin with the foundations of the talking drum, learning how to properly produce sound using the Do-Re-Mi (1-2-3) system. This simple and effective approach allows you to visually, physically, and musically understand how pitch, tone, and rhythm are created on the drum.

From there, you’ll learn how to

– Create rhythms using Do-Re-Mi combinations

– Play in time with click tracks and loopers

– Apply the talking drum across multiple genres

– Groove, support music, and solo confidently

– Understand real performance expectations

The course then dives into Alujo, a traditional Yoruba rhythmic dance form. You’ll learn how Alujo begins, how it transitions into continuous grooves, and how to creatively expand a single Alujo into multiple variations. Every Alujo is broken down clearly using Do-Re-Mi / 1-2-3, making complex rhythms easy to understand and apply.

You’ll also explore creativity beyond tradition by

– Creating Alujos on modern beats like Afrobeats and Reggaeton

– Turning familiar melodies into rhythmic Alujos

– Using Yoruba proverbs (Ã’we) to inspire rhythm and meaning

In the final section, you’ll learn how to actually make the talking drum talk. You’ll be guided through how to hear spoken phrases, understand their meaning, and reproduce them clearly on the drum using tonic solfa and visual explanations.

Throughout the course, Sambay shares valuable tips, dos and don’ts, and real-world wisdom gathered from years of working with other drummers and musicians. You’ll learn not just how to play, but how to play wisely, creatively, and with respect for the tradition.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to

– Play the talking drum with confidence and control

– Create rhythms and Alujos from scratch

– Solo musically across different genres

– Understand and perform drum language

– Apply the talking drum in live and performance settings

Whether you’re a beginner, a percussionist, or a musician looking to expand your skills, Sambay Tokasi gives you the tools to grow, express yourself, and truly connect with the voice of the talking drum.
