Course Content Overview

This course is designed around the Standard Course HSK 1 (标准教程 HSK 1) textbook but restructures its content based on my years of experiences as an instructor in teaching Chinese as a second language.

The goal? To create a logical, progressive learning path that builds skills step by step and help students be able to use them in real-life situations.

Course Structure

• 1 Introductory Section: This lays the groundwork for pronunciation, tones, and essential knowledge about the way the language works.

• 1 7 Lessons: This lessons covers all the topics in the reference textbook. Each lesson follows a consistent, effective format

Tone Practice : Starts with drills to master Chinese’s tones and pronunciation which is important for clear communication.

Core Content: Introduces new vocabulary and grammar with real-life contexts.

Quizzes: Short, interactive checks to reinforce learning mid-lesson.

Assignment: The end of lesson has task to test comprehension and identify gaps.

Practice Test: A practice test at the end of the course that mirrors the real reading section of the official HSK (Chinese proficiency exam) Level 1 exam.

Assessment: A quick survey to ensure this course truly supports your learning journey.

Structured Vocabulary & Grammar Integration

My teaching focuses on communication first, introducing new words through structured vocabulary and grammar. Each new topic begins with clear vocabulary introduction, including

• Meanings (in simple, clear terms)

• Pronunciation guides (with pauses to enable you to repeat after the me)

• Sentence structures guide: This explains key words and grammar words to help you build similar sentences independently.

• Lesson Task : Tone drills, quiz, assignment and practice to evaluate and strengthen skills.

Teaching Philosophy and Approach

I believe the most effective way to learn a language is to embrace the natural curiosity and approach of a child. Infants begin their linguistic journey not by writing, but by listening, speaking, and gradually progressing to written forms. This principle forms the foundation of our Chinese course, which prioritizes developing comprehensive listening comprehension and the ability to independently construct meaningful sentences—skills that extend far beyond rote textbook learning.

By fostering an immersive, curiosity-driven environment, students engage with the language authentically, building confidence and fluency through practical use rather than memorization.

Assignments after each lesson aren’t tests—they’re opportunities to practice what you’ve learned and assess your progress. I encourage using dictionaries (there are many free Chinese dictionary apps available) to look up new words, just as you would during real-life conversations when encountering unfamiliar terms.

Lesson Structure and Pacing

At the start of our lessons, I’ll introduce new material slowly and deliberately, pausing frequently to allow you to repeat each Chinese word or sentence after me. This repetition helps solidify pronunciation and memory while building confidence.

Each lesson is designed to build progressively on what you’ve already learned to form a sturdy foundation. We’ll begin each session with a brief review of previous material, reinforcing familiar words and phrases. After all, language acquisition thrives on consistent repetition and application, not just memorization.

As your foundation grows stronger, I’ll gradually increase the pace of instruction, introducing more advanced vocabulary and structures. These new words will be carefully selected to expand your usable vocabulary beyond the course itself, and inspire you to recreate sentences that meet your personal or professional language goals.

By the end, you’ll not only master the material but also develop the flexibility to adapt to real-world Chinese communication.
