Description
A starter in an electrical panel is a specialised device used to safely start, stop, and protect electric motors by managing high inrush current. It typically combines two contactors for power switching and an overload relay to prevent motor damage from overheating or excessive current. Different types of starters are used in electrical panel that is Star-delta, Direct online starter and Reversing starters.

In this course, we are covering different types of motor starters and their working methods that are used in the control system of the electrical panel. These are Direct On Line Starter (DOL Starter), Star Delta Starter and Reversing Starter.

Direct online starters are used to start simple and low-power Motors. This starter has only one contactor and two push-button switches, for START and STOP.

A star-delta starter is a common, cost-effective reduced-voltage method for starting 3-phase induction motors (above 5 Kw) to limit high inrush currents. It works by connecting motor windings in a star (Y) configuration initially, reducing the voltage to (1/√3 ) and starting current to 1/3 of direct-on-line. Once up to speed (90% of full speed), a timer switches it to delta (Δ) for full-speed operation. The Reversing Starter is a special type of push-button starter that, in addition to starting/stopping motors and reversing the direction of rotation of three-phase induction motors.
